39 Buses in Penang Fined for Lacking Second Drivers

By Loshinniy Nair S. Baskaran

15th September 2024 – In Penang, 39 buses were fined for not having a second driver during long-distance journeys exceeding 300 km, a violation of regulations aimed at ensuring road safety.

This requirement, enforced by the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD), is designed to prevent driver fatigue, which can lead to accidents. The ongoing operation highlights the need for bus operators to comply with this law, ensuring passengers’ safety and avoiding penalties. Bus companies are urged to prioritize adherence to regulations to mitigate risks and enhance road safety standards.

The operation serves as a reminder of the importance of strict enforcement of transportation laws, especially concerning long-distance routes. Fatigue-related accidents have long been a concern in public transportation, and regulations such as these are vital for protecting both passengers and drivers.

APAD’s actions emphasize that safety is paramount and that failure to comply with rules can result in serious legal consequences for bus operators. Moving forward, it is expected that stricter monitoring will be enforced to ensure that such lapses do not occur again.

Passengers are also encouraged to be aware of the rules and raise concerns if they notice non-compliance, contributing to collective safety on the roads. Bus operators, meanwhile, are urged to adopt responsible practices, including employing sufficient staff for long journeys, to avoid facing further punitive actions.

By complying with the law, they help build a safer, more reliable public transportation system, as stated in Free Malaysia Today.
