A 65-Year-Old Viriya Raman’s Selfless Journey to Feed Stray Animals
By Subaashinee Kupusamy,
8 OCTOBER: Viriya Raman, a 65-year-old lorry driver from Gombak, spends his evenings feeding hundreds of stray dogs across various locations. His journey began in 2010 after witnessing a mother dog feed her puppies a cat she had killed, a sight that deeply moved him. Since then, he has made it his mission to care for these abandoned animals.
Despite suffering from asthma, Viriya prepares up to 25kg of rice and 40kg of chicken daily, spending around RM300 per day to feed the dogs. His dedication has even extended to neutering over 40 of them. Although friends and family assist, Viriya handles most of the work himself, often traveling to remote areas where these strays reside. His tireless efforts ensure that the animals, many of whom are malnourished, injured, or abandoned, are not left hungry.
Even on weekends and public holidays, Viriya continues his mission, always providing care to the animals in need, despite the physical and financial challenges he faces as stated in Astro Ulagam.
