Kuala Lumpur, May 30: The Dewan Rakyat, has opted for a rational-legal provision, an establishment that segmented suicide attempts are no longer considered an “Act Of Offence”, to help silently sorrowing victims.
The elimination of the existing Section 309 of the Penal Code, will be a meaningful attempt to thwart suicide cracks in the country as well as to help those who require mental and emotional assistance, and for the victims to feel validated, to come out and seek help,” said Deputy Minister of the Prime Minister’s Department (Legal and Institutional Reforms) Ramkarpal Singh.
The MPs approved the Penal Code (Amendment) (No. 2) Bill to nullify Section 309 to decriminalize suicide in Malaysia, based on research demonstrating a decrease in suicide rate in countries with amended or repealed laws.
This effort of revamping will protect individuals from suicide due to cyberbullying. To date, about 2.3% of teenage Malaysians who are aged 16 and older are ultimately prone to depression.
Crisis intervention officers, who have the authority to detain anyone thought to exhibit mental instability, will have their position and power defined by the Mental Health Act.
