Kuala Lumpur, May 9: Shereen Samson Vallabuoy, a national sprinter, awarded the national team with another gold medal in the 400-meter race on Tuesday
The victory ended the nation’s drought for a gold medal in the competition since they last won it in 1999 – New Straits Times
Shereen crossed the finish line in 52.53 seconds to win easily and finish about a second ahead of her competitors at the Morodok Techo Stadium.
Since N. Manimagalay won the gold medal in the 400-meter event in the 1999 Brunei Games, Shereen is the first Malaysian woman to do so.
The 24-year-old woman acknowledged that it was challenging for her because of the lengthy travel from the US and the hot climate in Cambodia – New Straits Times
Nevertheless, she is happy to have fulfilled a long-standing goal.
“I have been working hard to win the 400m gold since I first competed at the Sea Games in 2015. This makes it (hard work) all worthwhile,” Shereen stated.
“The training I have undergone in the US has also helped me improve, especially in terms of technique.
“There is not much more I can say, I just wanted to give it my best. I also have to thank my family for their support,” she said.
