29TH AUGUST: The Cabinet has received the findings from the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) regarding sovereignty problems pertaining to Batu Puteh, Middle Rocks, and South Ledge, according to Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.
She added in a statement on Thursday, August 29, that “the Cabinet is concerned about issues related to the country’s sovereignty and has decided that the RCI report is to be tabled in Parliament, and the recommendations debated.”
According to the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reforms), RCI chairman Tun Md Raus Sharif delivered the report on Wednesday, August 28. On February 27, Azalina stated that while addressing matters of national sovereignty, the RCI was established to find a solution and proceed with changes, as opposed to apportion responsibility to anyone.
She stressed that the decision not to pursue the Application for Review and Request for Interpretation at the International Court of Justice regarding the sovereignty issues should be explained to Malaysians, particularly in Johor.
On June 12, during the RCI’s closed-door hearings, former prime minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad gave testimony. The Royal Caribbean gave His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia, its final report on August 12, MalayMail stated.
