‘Bill on non-Muslim faith’ a violation of human rights – WHF

By Sharunya Raja

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 17: World Hindu Federation (WHF) international executive member, V. Kandasamy has submitted a protest memorandum to the Prime Minister Office (PMO) against the latest inclusion of the Syariah law prohibiting non-muslim religions to propagate or develop their respective religion in Malaysia.

The memorandum was handed over to PMO on Sept 13.

In the memorandum, WHF said: “This bill contradicts the concept of “Malaysian Family” because we as non-Muslims feel that our religious rights are threatened, and it is not appropriate for the government to take any action to restrict the development of non-Muslim religions.

“Unity and the concept of respect between religions has been a pillar of national harmony and integration since Malaysia achieved independence.

“Any restrictions on religion that already exist will definitely create a sense of uneasiness and threat and will definitely threaten the harmony that we have built over the years,” the memorandum, which was sighted by The Hindu Press, added.

“Islamic law frankly states that harmony between religions should be respected and any interference in other religions is strictly prohibited.

“The department of religious affairs should be sensitive and discuss with the relevant parties before making any announcement involving the human rights of non-Muslim religions,” it added.
