Oscar-winning actor Cillian Murphy is set to return as the iconic Tommy Shelby in the upcoming Peaky Blinders film, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. The film, which continues the story of the Birmingham gangster drama created by Steven Knight, is now officially in production, with direction by Tom Harper. The feature-length movie will take place a few years after the events of the series’ finale, and the announcement was made by the streaming platform on Monday.
The movie will serve as a continuation of the six-season series, which starred Murphy alongside Paul Anderson, Helen McCrory, Tom Hardy, and Joe Cole. New additions to the cast include Saltburn actor Barry Keoghan and Dune star Rebecca Ferguson, both of whom are confirmed to join Murphy in the upcoming project.
In the official announcement, the production team quoted the infamous line, “By order of the Peaky Blinders,” to confirm Tommy Shelby’s return. The Peaky Blinders TV series wrapped up its sixth and final season in 2022, shortly before Murphy moved on to star in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, a performance that earned him an Academy Award.
Aside from Peaky Blinders, Murphy’s upcoming project, Small Things Like These, delves into the harrowing history of Ireland’s church-run workhouses for unwed mothers. The film is scheduled to premiere in the U.K. on November 1 and in the U.S. on November 8, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
