Cops Crack Down on Misleading Social Media Content in Flood-Affected Areas
By Subaashinee Kupusamy,
21 SEPTEMBER: In response to the recent floods, Malaysian authorities are taking action against individuals creating deceptive social media content related to the disaster. Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani, announced that police have initiated investigations into several cases involving false claims and misinformation spread across various platforms.
The police have highlighted the potential harm of such misinformation, which could lead to public panic and confusion during emergencies. In particular, they are targeting individuals sharing photos and videos that inaccurately depict the extent of the flooding or misrepresent rescue efforts.
These actions not only undermine the efforts of rescue teams but can also hinder the public’s understanding of the situation.
The police are urging the public to verify information before sharing it online. They emphasized the importance of accurate reporting, especially in times of crisis. Those found guilty of disseminating false information may face legal consequences, including charges under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
Authorities are committed to maintaining public safety and ensuring that accurate information prevails during such critical situations as stated in NST.
