COVID-19: King declares state of emergency
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 12: Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah today proclaimed an emergency that will be enforced until Aug 1 as a proactive measure in order to curb the spread of COVID-19 in the country.
The King agreed to the decision after a meeting with Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin on Monday.
In a statement today, the Comptroller of the Royal Household of Istana Negara Datuk Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin said that the emergency will last until Aug 1 or earlier depending on the state of coronavirus infections.
“During a 45-minute face-to-face session starting at 5.30pm yesterday, Tan Sri Muhyiddin bin Yassin presented the results of the Cabinet Meeting on the proposed implementation of the proclamation of a state of emergency as a proactive measure to curb and address the positive COVID-19 daily cases that have continuously reached four figures since last December,” the statement said.
Sultan Abdullah also consented to a government proposal to set up an independent committee comprising government and opposition MPs as well as health experts to manage the Covid-19 situation, he said.
“This Independent Committee will make recommendations to His Majesty if it deems fit that the emergency can be withdrawn much earlier (than Aug 1), ” said Ahmad Fadzriq.
