DAY 4 – SAR OPERATION FOR MISSING WOMAN IN SINKHOLE CONTINUES WITH FLUSHING TECHNIQUE

By Subaashinee Kupusamy,

26 August 2024: The search and rescue (SAR) operation for the missing Indian national woman who fell into a sinkhole on Jalan Masjid India has entered its fourth day. Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has confirmed that the team has been employing a flushing technique at various manholes in a bid to locate the victim.

The flushing technique was first implemented yesterday evening and has been conducted in stages. Despite two rounds of flushing, the woman has yet to be found. Indah Water Konsortium initiated a third round of flushing at the fifth manhole, which continued late into the night until 2 am on August 26 case as stated in Live news.

Introduction of the Flushing Method

On the fourth day of the search, experts decided to implement the flushing method, focusing efforts around Manhole 5. This technique is designed to increase the chances of locating the missing woman by manipulating the flow of water within the drainage system.

How the Flushing Method Works

The flushing method involves the controlled release of water into the drainage system at strategic points. The goal is to create a forceful flow that can potentially dislodge any objects or obstructions within the pipes, including debris that may be concealing the missing woman. The method operates as follows:

  1. Water Introduction: Large volumes of water are pumped into the drainage system at specific entry points. These are carefully chosen based on the layout of the underground pipes and the last known location of the missing woman.
  2. Controlled Flow: The water is released in a controlled manner, ensuring it travels through the system with sufficient force to clear blockages but without causing additional structural damage or risking the safety of the search teams.
  3. Monitoring: The flow of water is closely monitored using cameras and sensors placed within the drainage system. This allows the search teams to observe any changes or movement within the pipes in real-time.
  4. Inspection: As the water flows through the system, it is inspected at various manholes, including Manhole 5, where the search is currently concentrated. Search teams look for any signs of the missing woman or clues that could lead to her discovery.

The use of the flushing method in the search for the missing woman near Manhole 5 underscores the dedication and innovation of the rescue teams involved. As the operation progresses, the public waits anxiously for any news, holding on to hope that the woman will be found soon. The authorities have pledged to continue their efforts until every possible avenue has been explored, demonstrating their commitment to resolving this tragic.
