DBKL Cancels Merdeka Eve Celebrations Following Tragic Incident
By Subaashinee Kupusamy,
29 August: Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has decided to cancel the planned Merdeka Eve celebrations on August 30 at Dataran Merdeka. This decision follows a tragic incident on Jalan Masjid India, where a woman fell into a sinkhole, and search efforts are still ongoing. The victim, identified as Vijayaletchumy, has not yet been found, despite intensive search and rescue operations involving ground-penetrating radar and other sophisticated equipment.
The cancellation reflects DBKL’s respect for the somber mood following the incident, signaling a time for reflection rather than celebration. In a statement, DBKL urged the public to consider the true meaning of National Day and to express their patriotism in more personal and meaningful ways. While the event was intended to be a festive lead-up to Malaysia’s Independence Day, the priority has now shifted towards respecting the affected family and community, showing unity through compassion during this difficult time as stated in the Star.
