Discounts on Sugary Items to End in October Under Rahmah Sales

By Loshinniy Nair S. Baskaran

12th September 2024 – Starting October, the Rahmah Sales initiative will no longer include discounts on sugary products, according to Deputy Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Fuziah Salleh. She emphasized that while discounts on certain items would be withdrawn, healthier alternatives would still be offered at reduced prices as part of the program.

This decision aligns with the government’s commitment to improving public health and reducing sugar consumption, especially considering Malaysia’s high diabetes rates. Fuziah also clarified that while discounts for sugary products would cease, the Rahmah Sales initiative remains focused on offering essential goods and healthier options at affordable prices to ease the burden on consumers.

The Rahmah Sales program, introduced to provide cost-of-living relief, has played a vital role in assisting low-income households by offering a range of discounted products. However, the new adjustment is a move towards promoting healthier eating habits while still catering to the financial needs of the public.

Fuziah emphasized the government’s responsibility to ensure access to nutritious food and highlighted the balance between affordability and public health in their policies. The end of discounts on sugary goods is part of broader efforts to encourage healthier lifestyles without removing support for consumers seeking affordable necessities, as stated in Malaymail.
