Education Ministry to Decide Schools for Use as Flood Shelters: PM

22nd September 2024 – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that the Education Ministry will determine which schools will be utilized as temporary flood shelters.
This decision is part of the government’s flood preparedness plan as the monsoon season approaches. Speaking at a recent event, Anwar emphasized that while schools serve primarily for educational purposes, their role as emergency shelters during floods is crucial.
To ensure minimal disruption to schooling, a strategic plan is being put in place to balance both functions effectively.The Prime Minister also highlighted the importance of coordinating efforts across relevant ministries, including the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA), to ensure the safety and well-being of those affected by floods.
This coordination aims to streamline shelter management and provide adequate resources and support for evacuees.The government remains committed to being proactive in addressing flood risks, given the nation’s vulnerability to seasonal flooding.
Anwar reiterated the need for swift action to mitigate the impact on affected communities, especially in flood-prone areas.
In addition, disaster response efforts will continue to prioritize the welfare of displaced residents, ensuring they receive proper care and assistance.With the monsoon season approaching, the government aims to ensure that schools can serve as safe shelters, without hindering students’ education, as stated in The Star.
