Experts Warn of Potential for Severe Flooding Following Malaysia’s Heatwave

By Loshinniy Nair S. Baskaran,

27th August 2024 – Experts have raised concerns that Malaysia’s ongoing heatwave may lead to more severe flooding during the upcoming monsoon season. The extreme heat, which has caused soil to harden, may prevent rainwater from being absorbed, increasing the risk of flash floods. As temperatures soar, the atmosphere holds more moisture, potentially resulting in heavier rainfall when the monsoon arrives.

Additionally, urbanization and deforestation have exacerbated the situation by reducing natural drainage areas, further heightening flood risks. Climate experts are urging immediate action to address these issues, including improved infrastructure and sustainable land management practices. They emphasize that while heatwaves and droughts are concerning, the potential for subsequent flooding is equally alarming

The government is advised to strengthen early warning systems and emergency preparedness to mitigate the impacts of these potential floods. Experts also stress the importance of public awareness and education on climate change adaptation. With extreme weather events becoming more frequent due to global climate change, Malaysia faces a pressing need to enhance its resilience to both heatwaves and floods. The article highlights the urgent need for comprehensive strategies to tackle the dual threats of extreme heat and increased flooding in the region, as stated in Malaymail.
