Ferry Services Between Langkawi and Kuala Kedah Canceled Due to Rough Seas
By Loshinniy Nair S. Baskaran,
On September 18, 2024, eight ferry services between Langkawi and Kuala Kedah were canceled due to strong waves, affecting more than 2,000 passengers. The ferry operators had to make the difficult decision to suspend services for the safety of passengers after the Malaysian Meteorological Department issued a warning about rough sea conditions.
The affected ferries included trips from both Langkawi to Kuala Kedah and vice versa. This situation impacted over 2,000 passengers who were supposed to travel from Langkawi and around 937 passengers on the Kuala Kedah-Langkawi route. The scheduled trips that were disrupted took place between late morning and mid-afternoon.
Passengers were advised to either seek alternative routes, such as through Kuala Perlis, or wait for the next available ferry service depending on sea conditions. However, diverting passengers to Kuala Perlis became impractical due to congestion at the terminal, leaving many with no choice but to delay their journey until weather conditions improved.
The ferry operators and authorities urged the public to stay updated on weather conditions and to follow instructions to ensure their safety. Meanwhile, the passengers affected by the cancellations were encouraged to contact the ferry service provider for more information on refunds or rescheduling options. The situation will continue to be monitored, with services expected to resume once the sea conditions calm down.
This disruption serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by maritime transportation during adverse weather conditions, as stated in Sinar Harian.
