By Loshinniy Nair S. Baskaran,

22nd August 2024 –Search teams have located the body of Alasma Jithil, the final missing victim from the Sarawak boat tragedy. The 26-year-old’s remains were discovered at 7:25 AM by a search team comprising officers from the Fire and Rescue Department and the Marine Police Force. The tragic incident took place on August 18, when a boat carrying nine people capsized near Kampung Lintang, Triso Bay in Sarawak.

The discovery of Alasma’s body concludes the search and rescue operation, which had been ongoing for several days. The authorities had earlier recovered the bodies of the other victims, including two children. The survivors, who were pulled from the water shortly after the accident, have been identified and are being treated for their injuries.

Authorities believe the boat capsized due to strong currents in the area, which are common during this time of year. They have also noted that the boat was likely overloaded, contributing to the disaster. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the accident.

The Sarawak state government has extended its condolences to the victims’ families, offering assistance and support during this difficult time. The tragic event has raised concerns about the safety of river transport in the region, with officials urging for stricter enforcement of safety regulations to prevent similar incidents in the future, as stated in Malaymail.
