Genocide of Hindus in Bangladesh: An Alarming Crisis

By Subaashinee Kupusamy,

BANGLADESH, 7th August: Since the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on August 5, 2024, Bangladesh has seen a dramatic escalation in violence against its Hindu minority. The situation is dire, with widespread attacks resulting in deaths, kidnappings, and extensive property damage.

The World Hindu Federation (WHF) has termed these atrocities as a “genocide,” highlighting the urgent need for international intervention.

According to Dipan Mitra, secretary general of the World Hindu Federation Bangladesh Chapter, the violence has affected at least 39 districts, with reported incidents including the killing of four Hindu leaders—Haradhan Roy, Kajal Roy, Mrinal Kanti Chatterjee, and an unidentified individual.

Additionally, three Hindu girls have been kidnapped, and over 50 temples have been vandalized or destroyed. The targeted vandalism and looting have not spared residential areas, with more than 240 Hindu houses and 136 shops suffering similar fates.

In Rangpur, prominent leaders Haradhan Roy and Kajal Roy were shot dead, while Sherpur saw the destruction of temples and homes. In Khulna, the violence extended to the killing of an unidentified Hindu man and extensive looting and burning of properties.

The atrocities continue across various districts, including Feni, Dinajpur, Lakshmipur, and Jashore, where temples were desecrated and homes and businesses looted, as stated in report of ‘Atrocities of Minority Hindus in Bangladesh’

Notably, the violence in Satkhaira involved attacks on the homes of Hindu leaders such as Biswajit Sadhu and Dr. Subrata Ghosh. The pattern of attacks, including those in Meherpur and Bogra, shows a systematic effort to instill fear and drive the Hindu community into hiding.

In Feni, the Bashpara Durga Temple was looted and burnt, and several Hindu shops were similarly destroyed. The violence in Dinajpur saw the Fulthala cremation ground forcefully occupied and several temples vandalized. In Lakshmipur, the house of a Hindu leader and various homes were attacked and looted.

The WHF has issued a plea to world leaders to intervene and halt these brutalities, ensuring the safety and security of the Hindu minority in Bangladesh. This call to action underscores the gravity of the situation and the need for a concerted global response to protect vulnerable communities from further harm.

The ongoing violence against Hindus in Bangladesh is not only a national crisis but a humanitarian emergency that demands immediate international attention and action to prevent further loss of life and property.
