6th September 2024 – The Perak High Court has denied bail for a police officer charged with the murder of a student in a hit-and-run accident last year. The accused, a 40-year-old officer, allegedly hit the 16-year-old student with his car and fled the scene.
Judge Abdul Rahman Sebli ruled against granting bail, citing the severity of the charge and the need to ensure the accused remains in custody. The prosecution had argued that the nature of the crime warranted strict action and that the accused could potentially interfere with the investigation if released.
The incident, which occurred in 2023, caused public outrage, and the family of the deceased has been seeking justice since then. The accused faces charges under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment upon conviction.
The court has set the next hearing date, and the trial is expected to proceed with witness testimonies. The case continues to draw public attention due to the involvement of a law enforcement officer in such a serious crime, as stated in Malaymail.
