Hindu Groups Raises Concern on Federal Territories Mufti Bill
By Subaashinee Kupusamy,
22nd October: Hindu groups in Malaysia have raised concerns over the Federal Territories Mufti Bill, requesting that it be postponed until further consultations are conducted. The Malaysian Coalition of Hindu NGOs and Temples highlighted several provisions within the bill that may be inconsistent with the Federal Constitution, particularly in relation to religious freedoms and the rights of minorities.
The coalition stressed that without proper dialogue and consultation with all religious communities, the bill could lead to misunderstandings and potentially disrupt interfaith harmony. They fear that the law, if passed in its current form, may result in long-term negative implications for Malaysia’s multicultural society.
The groups urged the government to adopt a more transparent and inclusive approach when drafting laws that affect religious matters. By doing so, they believe it would ensure greater mutual understanding and respect among different faiths, and avoid creating unnecessary tension.
The coalition’s call comes at a time when religious sensitivity is particularly crucial in Malaysia’s diverse social landscape. They remain hopeful that the government will engage in meaningful dialogue with the relevant stakeholders before moving forward with the legislation as stated in Malaysia Kini.
