India Extends OCI Registration for Malaysian Indians to 6th Generation

KUALA LUMPUR, 30 October 2025: In a landmark decision set to significantly impact the Malaysian Indian community, the Government of India has approved the extension of eligibility for the Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card to the sixth generation of Indian-origin citizens residing in Malaysia. This policy adjustment immediately broadens the scope of permanent residency benefits available to the diaspora, effectively addressing long-standing hurdles related to ancestral documentation.

The extension is a direct response to persistent appeals from the Malaysian Indian community and its representatives, many of whom faced difficulties providing proof of Indian descent beyond the previously mandated limits—typically the third or fourth generation. Historical migration patterns, particularly during the British colonial era, often resulted in the loss or absence of key documents, making it impossible for later generations to establish the necessary familial link.

Bridging an Ancestral Gap

The new ruling permits individuals whose forefathers migrated from India up to six generations ago to apply for OCI status. This dramatic expansion in eligibility is intended to reconcile the nation’s citizenship rules with the historical reality of the diaspora, ensuring that a much larger segment of the estimated two million Malaysian Indians can now formally reconnect with their ancestral homeland.

The OCI status confers substantial benefits on the cardholder, including lifelong visa-free entry to India, the ability to reside and work in the country indefinitely, and parity with Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) in various economic, financial, and educational matters, such as property ownership (excluding agricultural land) and professional pursuits. Crucially, the card does not grant Indian citizenship, allowing recipients to retain their current Malaysian nationality.

The High Commission of India in Kuala Lumpur has acknowledged the logistical challenges applicants face and has actively sought simplification of the procedure. This extension is viewed as a monumental step in the Indian government’s ongoing effort to strengthen cultural and emotional bonds with its global diaspora, fostering greater engagement, investment, and collaboration between India and Malaysia.

The announcement brings a renewed sense of connection and belonging to a community whose ties to India span more than a century.
