Ipoh Couple Devotes Their Lives to Caring for Cats

10 February: Being kind to one animal may not change the world, but it will change the world for that one animal. Every morning at 7 am, Ramlah Darus and her husband, Salim Dahri, start their day by feeding rescued cats at their home in Taman Perpaduan Koperasi, Ipoh, Perak—often before having their own breakfast.

After tending to the cats, Ramlah rides her scooter to the market, always carrying a cage to rescue abandoned cats. Last year, the couple established the NGO Persatuan Prihatin Kucing Jalanan Ipoh, Perak, with like-minded friends and family to support stray cat rescue efforts and manage public donations.

“Honestly, my husband and I cannot afford to take care of the cats by ourselves,” Ramlah admitted, relying on social media to seek donations. Despite their good intentions, the couple faces criticism from some who question why they keep so many cats despite financial struggles. However, they remain committed.

“Not everyone agrees with what we do, but we are determined to continue as long as we can,” she said. To support themselves, Ramlah also offers cat boarding services. Those wishing to donate can contact her at 011-3976 4493.
