Italy Declares State of Emergency Over Flood-Hit Northern Regions

22nd September 2024: Italy declared a state of emergency for two northern regions, Emilia-Romagna and Marche, on Saturday following days of torrential rainfall, as reported by the German news agency DPA.
The right-wing government led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also allocated emergency aid worth €20 million (approximately USD 22 million) to support these regions affected by severe flooding.
The continuous downpours have caused rivers to overflow, flooding vast areas, damaging homes, and disrupting infrastructure. Many residents were forced to evacuate, while local authorities are struggling to manage the widespread destruction.
Emergency services have been deployed to the worst-affected areas to assist in rescue operations and provide essential supplies.The government’s swift response aims to address the immediate needs of the affected populations and restore essential services.
The €20 million emergency fund is expected to be utilized for rebuilding efforts and to help the affected residents recover from the devastation.The declaration of a state of emergency allows the government to mobilize additional resources and expedite the recovery process.
The regions of Emilia-Romagna and Marche are among the hardest hit by the recent extreme weather, with further rain forecasted in the coming days.Prime Minister Meloni assured the public that the government is fully committed to supporting these regions and mitigating the impact of the floods.
