21 August 2024: A 48-year-old unemployed man, Azman Mohamed Nor, faces three separate murder charges in the Magistrate’s Court here. The charges are for the deaths of his 76-year-old mother, Ara Ab Hamit; his 82-year-old father, Mohamed Nor Mohamed Yassin; and his 11-year-old niece, Noradriana Nor Hasyim. The alleged murders occurred between 1am and 3am on August 9 at their home in Kampung Paya Redan, Pagoh.
Magistrate Suzana Mokhtar read the charges to Azman, but no plea was recorded as murder cases are handled by the High Court. Under Section 302 of the Penal Code, Azman faces the death penalty, which can be commuted to 30-40 years in prison and a minimum of 20 strokes of the cane if convicted. The next court date is set for October 24 to gather forensic, post-mortem, and chemical reports.
In a related case in the Sessions Court, Azman admitted to intentionally causing serious injury to his 14-year-old niece, Norazmina Mohd Razi, using a wooden stick. This incident, which occurred at the same time and place as the murders, is covered under Section 326 of the Penal Code and carries a potential 20-year prison sentence, a fine, or whipping. Judge Nariman Badruddin scheduled sentencing for September 12, pending finalization of the case facts.
Azman remains in custody without bail. Deputy public prosecutors Mohamad Arif Marzuki and Danial Munir represent the prosecution, while Azman is currently unrepresented as stated in The Star.
