JPJ Fines 25 Express Buses for Missing Second Drivers

By Loshinniy Nair S. Baskaran,

26th December: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has issued summonses to 25 express and tour buses for not having a second driver on board. This safety requirement ensures long-distance drivers do not face exhaustion, which could lead to accidents.

During a special operation held on December 24, JPJ inspected 193 express and tour buses at various terminals nationwide. Of these, 47 buses were found to have committed 55 offenses. Among these violations, not having a second driver was the most common. Other offenses included failing to provide a passenger manifest, expired licenses, and defective lights.

JPJ emphasized that the second-driver requirement is critical, particularly during festive periods, when bus travel increases. It ensures drivers get sufficient rest and prevents fatigue during long journeys. JPJ also warned that non-compliance with safety standards could lead to stricter actions, including suspending permits. The operation aims to prioritize passenger safety and encourage compliance with transport regulations.

JPJ reminded bus operators to follow the rules and ensure their vehicles are in good condition. Passengers were urged to report any violations or unsafe practices they observe to the authorities. These efforts are part of JPJ’s ongoing commitment to improving road safety nationwide, as stated in the Star.
