Keeping Ipoh’s Dhobi Wallah Tradition Alive
By Subaashinee Kupusamy,
25 SEPTEMBER: In the heart of Ipoh, a few dedicated dhobi wallahs continue the century-old laundry tradition brought by Indian immigrants during British colonial rule.
The dhobi wallahs of Ipoh face several challenges, including the rising popularity of modern laundromats, which have drastically reduced their customer base. Additionally, the labor-intensive nature of their work, which involves hand-washing, drying, and ironing clothes, is physically demanding, particularly for the aging washermen. Financial strain, due to lower income and fewer customers, adds further pressure. Despite these difficulties, they remain dedicated to preserving this traditional craft.
Despite facing diminishing clientele and personal challenges, these dhobi wallahs take great pride in their labor-intensive craft, ensuring every garment is handled with care. Though the future of this tradition is uncertain, their efforts preserve a rich cultural heritage for those who still seek their services as stated in Astro Ulagam.
