Klang Eateries Risk RM1,000 Fines for Grease Trap Mismanagement

By Subaashinee Kupusamy,

KLANG, 18 August: In Klang, licensed eatery operators will face a RM1,000 fine if they either remove or fail to maintain grease traps, which are crucial in preventing fats, oil, and grease (FOG) from flowing into the drains behind their establishments.

Azmi Muji, Director of the Klang Royal City Council’s (MBDK) Health and Environment Department, announced that health inspectors recommended tougher penalties for eateries that neglect grease trap maintenance. The RM1,000 fine, effective immediately and non-negotiable, aims to prevent FOG buildup in drains.

Azmi highlighted that improper disposal of cooking oil and fats can harden, narrowing the drains and damaging culverts, leading to increased costs for the council. Grease traps have been mandatory since 2011, with eateries required to install them before receiving a business license.

Recent inspections revealed problems at two restaurants. One in Bandar Botanic had its grease trap dismantled and used a side lane for food preparation, leading to clogged drains. This outlet was temporarily closed until August 27 for cleaning and grease trap installation.

The second restaurant, off Jalan Mengkuang, was shut down until August 28 due to cockroach infestations and unsanitary conditions, including chicken pieces left on the floor. Both establishments received fines and warnings to improve hygiene.

Azmi noted that from January to now, 13 eateries have been closed for hygiene violations, with ongoing issues related to grease trap maintenance and food residue disposal as stated in The Star.
