19th September 2024 – Malaysian authorities have apprehended the mastermind behind a syndicate involved in “counter setting” at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). This scheme exploited foreign travelers by offering fast-tracked immigration clearance at exorbitant prices. The operation was busted after complaints from tourists who reported being charged for smooth passage.
The arrest occurred after an investigation involving the Immigration Department and other enforcement agencies, following reports of corruption at the airport. The syndicate is believed to have bribed airport officials to allow passengers without proper documentation or clearance to bypass regular immigration checks.
Authorities launched a series of raids, uncovering crucial evidence, including transaction details and the names of individuals involved in the scam. These findings led to the arrest of key figures in the syndicate, including the leader. Several KLIA officials, allegedly complicit in the operation, are also under investigation.
The “counter setting” system had been operational for some time, with the mastermind leveraging connections with corrupt officials to facilitate the illegal scheme. The modus operandi involved offering passengers the option to bypass immigration queues by paying hefty fees, which were then shared among the syndicate and their airport collaborators.
Officials have warned that such criminal activities threaten Malaysia’s international reputation as a tourist-friendly destination. The syndicate’s operations not only breached security protocols but also posed significant risks to national security by allowing unvetted individuals into the country.
The authorities have vowed to pursue further investigations to dismantle any remaining elements of the syndicate and hold all involved accountable. Efforts are underway to tighten security measures at KLIA, ensuring that such incidents do not reoccur.
This arrest marks a major breakthrough in efforts to combat corruption and illegal activities at one of Malaysia’s key entry points. Authorities encourage the public and tourists to report any suspicious behavior at the airport to prevent future misconduct, as stated in The Star.
