7 OCTOBER: Former DAP MP, Lee Lam Thye, was honored with a special award at the National Senior Citizens Day celebrations, recognizing his extensive contributions to society. Lee, who once represented Bukit Bintang in Parliament, expressed his deep gratitude for the award, acknowledging it as a tribute to his decades-long efforts in advocating for workers’ rights, fighting corruption, and promoting crime prevention, among other causes.
At 78, Lee reflected on the significance of this recognition, noting that it highlights the important role elderly citizens continue to play in Malaysia. “This award is meaningful because it acknowledges the contributions of seniors who still have the health and energy to contribute to society,” he said. Lee has been a prominent figure in social activism and previously served as the chairman of the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).
In addition to celebrating Lee’s achievements, the event also saw the launch of the eWarga Emas portal, spearheaded by Deputy Minister for Women, Family and Community Development, Noraini Ahmad. The platform is designed to enhance government services for senior citizens, providing better data management and policy planning while offering elderly Malaysians easy access to information on job opportunities and relevant facilities.
Noraini also mentioned that the ministry is in the process of drafting the Senior Citizens Bill, aimed at safeguarding the rights and wellbeing of Malaysia’s aging population. The bill, once implemented, is expected to address various concerns facing seniors and ensure that their contributions are respected and their needs adequately met.
Lee’s recognition, along with the ministry’s initiatives, emphasizes the ongoing importance of senior citizens in shaping the future of the nation as stated in FMT.
