Low Wages and High Living Costs: The Root of Worker Unhappiness, Says MTUC

By Subaashinee Kupusamy,

PETALING JAYA, 10 August: The Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) has identified low wages and rising living costs as primary causes of widespread dissatisfaction among Malaysian workers. According to MTUC, even with economic growth, the gap between wages and living expenses has widened, leaving many workers struggling financially. This financial strain has led to increased stress, anxiety, and overall unhappiness in the workforce.

MTUC has called for significant reforms to address these issues, urging the government and employers to implement policies that ensure fair wages and mitigate the escalating cost of living. The organization stresses that without such changes, the well-being and productivity of the workforce will continue to decline.

The union also highlights that the lack of affordable housing, healthcare, and other basic necessities exacerbates the situation. Workers are finding it increasingly difficult to maintain a decent standard of living, which in turn affects their mental and physical health. MTUC suggests that addressing these concerns is not only a matter of improving workers’ lives but is also crucial for sustaining economic growth in the long term.

Furthermore, MTUC advocates for stronger labour laws that protect workers’ rights, emphasizing the need for collective bargaining to secure better working conditions. They argue that a more supportive legal framework would empower workers to negotiate for fairer wages and benefits, ultimately leading to a more satisfied and motivated workforce.

The MTUC’s stance reflects the urgent need for a comprehensive review of Malaysia’s wage policies and living cost regulations, aiming to create a more equitable and supportive environment for workers across the country as stated in Free Malaysia Today.
