Malaysia Airports Serve 8.7 Million Passengers in August 2024

By Loshinniy Nair S.Baskaran,

20th September 2024: Airports across Malaysia handled 8.7 million air passengers in August 2024, reflecting a 12.7% growth compared to 7.7 million in August 2023. This continued the strong growth in both international and domestic sectors, according to the Malaysian Aviation Commission (MAVCOM).

However, on a month-to-month basis, air traffic saw a slight decline of 1.5% from 8.8 million passengers recorded in July 2024. MAVCOM Executive Chairman, Datuk Seri Saripuddin Kasim, noted that while the monthly dip is small, the strong annual growth signals a steady recovery for the aviation sector.

“The recovery of international seat capacity, visa exemptions for key markets, and the introduction of new routes bolster our confidence in meeting MAVCOM’s annual passenger traffic forecast,” Saripuddin said.

The growth was driven mainly by international travel, with new routes launched in August, including flights from Kuala Lumpur to Ningbo, Karipur, and Guwahati, as well as from Kota Kinabalu to Ningbo and Bali. The visa exemptions for tourists from China and India also contributed to the increase in international traffic, reaching 90.2% of August 2019 levels.

In August 2024, domestic air traffic reached 4.2 million passengers, accounting for 48.6% of the total. Although there was a 1.3% decrease from July 2024, it represented a 2.2% year-on-year increase from August 2023.

International passenger traffic made up 51.4% of the total, with 4.5 million passengers in August 2024. Non-ASEAN international routes saw the highest growth, increasing by 34.6% year-on-year.

Malaysia’s major airports also recorded positive growth compared to August 2023, with Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) seeing a 20.1% increase, and Penang, Langkawi, Senai, and Kota Kinabalu airports all experiencing notable rises.

For the first eight months of 2024, total passenger traffic reached 64.1 million, with international traffic leading the recovery, as stated in Buletin TV3.
