Malaysian Banks to Block Banking Apps on Infected Devices

By Loshinniy Nair S.Baskaran

Kuala Lumpur, 9th August 2024 – Malaysian banks are set to enhance security by restricting access to their mobile banking apps on devices that are compromised by malware. This initiative is part of a broader effort to protect customers from online scams and fraudulent transactions.

Known as “malware shielding,” this feature will prevent users from accessing banking services if their devices are identified as compromised. The goal is to stop unauthorized transactions and safeguard customers’ funds. This measure aligns with guidelines from Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) aimed at enhancing digital banking security.

The banks are urging customers to update their devices and apps regularly to avoid being locked out. If a device is flagged, users will need to remove the malware or use a different, secure device to regain access to their banking apps.

This move comes in response to the growing threat of cyberattacks, which have become more sophisticated in recent years. By implementing these measures, Malaysian banks aim to stay ahead of potential threats and provide a safer banking environment for all users, as stated in the Star.
