24 SEPTEMBER: The Malaysian film Tegkang, directed by Josh Nawan, won the Best New Filmmaker Award at the First-Time Filmmaker Showcase, part of the prestigious Lift-Off Sessions at Pinewood Studios, London. The film, which tells the story of a village in Bario, Sarawak, harboring a long-hidden secret, was selected on September 18.
With this win, Tegkang qualifies for the final round of the Season Awards, where the best projects of the Lift-Off season are celebrated. Nawan expressed pride in the film’s recognition, emphasizing its significance for the Kelabit community, who have been underrepresented in the arts.
Producer Lyn Nasihin hopes the film will draw more attention to Malaysia’s growing film industry as stated in Bernama.
