Malaysian Student Convicted of Murder for Stuffing Her Newborn into a Cereal Box

By Subaashinee Kupusamy,

25th October: Teo Jia Xin, a 22-year-old Malaysian student in the UK, was recently convicted of murdering her newborn after concealing her pregnancy. On March 4, 2024, Teo gave birth alone in her student accommodation. Fearing her family’s reaction, she placed her baby in a cereal box inside a suitcase. Medical staff discovered the tragic event when Teo sought help for severe bleeding. The court found that the newborn was alive at birth, and Teo’s actions were intentional. Despite her defence, the jury convicted her of murder, with sentencing expected soon.

Her tragic case highlights the pressures and fear surrounding unexpected pregnancies, particularly among young women studying abroad. The prosecution presented evidence that the baby could have survived, had Teo sought immediate medical care. This haunting decision has garnered significant media attention and stirred debates on mental health and social support for international students facing similar struggles as stated in Saysdotcom.
