Malaysia’s 61-Year Journey: A Call for Infrastructure Upgrades

By Subaashinee Kupusamy,

16 SEPTEMBER: As Malaysia celebrates its 61st anniversary on September 16, 2024, the nation’s growth raises important questions about its development.

While some might compare Malaysia’s age to that of a person nearing retirement, it is vital to recognize that in terms of civilization-building, 61 years is still young. Yet, signs of premature aging in the country’s infrastructure are concerning.

Despite the steady construction of highways and ports since the 1980s, including the North-South Expressway and Port Tanjung Pelepas, there is an urgent need to upgrade and maintain these infrastructures. Airports are critical gateways for tourism and foreign investment.

Unfortunately, KLIA, once among the world’s top airports, has declined in quality, ranked as one of the worst in Asia in 2024. Aging facilities, long security queues, and malfunctioning aerotrains highlight the need for serious investment.

The solution may lie in the privatization of Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB). A proposed consortium led by KWSP and Khazanah, along with foreign partners, could inject the necessary capital to overhaul airport operations.

With experienced investors like Global Investment Partners involved, there is potential for improved connectivity and passenger growth, similar to the transformation seen at Edinburgh Airport.

Ultimately, as the nation reflects on its past, it is essential to embrace practical solutions for infrastructure enhancement to secure a competitive future for Malaysia. Rational thinking, rather than emotional reactions, will drive the country’s progress forward as stated in Berita Harian.
