KUALA LUMPUR, 17 May: Since the government provides sanitary pads to the target populations, such as the Orang Asli, B40, and those who cannot afford them, menstrual or period poverty in Malaysia is not at a concerning level.
The sanitary pads were provided, according to Women, Family, and Community Development Minister Nancy Shukri, to protect the women’s hygiene.
According to FMT, “The B40 group, which is our target group, is helped by the ministry. We will keep providing assistance to this group in order to prevent their exclusion because we are aware that some people use coconut fibre (as sanitary napkins). It is unsanitary and unhealthy,” she declared.
She was addressing at the distribution of RM10,000 to 10 schools as part of the “Kotex She Can” programme, which aims to improve educational environments for female students. She claimed that the course teaches students about menstruation cleanliness, a subject that was earlier hardly ever brought up.
The community has to stop viewing this topic as prohibited so that young women can learn how to take care of themselves when they are menstruating.
She continued, “With the availability of social media platforms like TikTok and YouTube, it can more readily impart knowledge and education (on menstrual hygiene) and be welcomed by the society, even men as stated in FMT.
