Man Arrested for Defaming Fallen Policemen in Ulu Tiram Attack

By Subaashinee Kupusamy,

7 SEPTEMBER: A man from Johor was arrested for allegedly posting defamatory content on social media about one of the policemen killed during an attack on the Ulu Tiram police station in Johor.

The arrest came after a report was lodged by a relative of the late Constable Ahmad Azza Fahmi Azhar on August 29. According to Tapah District Police Chief Superintendent Mohd Naim Asnawi, the relative claimed the man’s comments on Facebook were deeply hurtful to the family.

A team from the Tapah police headquarters arrested the individual, identified as Wan Qayyum, at his home in Masai, Johor, on September 5. Authorities also seized his mobile phone for further investigation. The suspect has been remanded until September 9.

The case is being investigated under Section 500 of the Penal Code for defamation, Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act for offensive communication, and Section 14 of the Minor Offenses Act.

The defamatory remarks alleged that the two slain policemen were involved in bribery, which Wan Qayyum claimed had triggered the attack. The incident on May 17 left two policemen, Constables Ahmad Azza and Muhamad Syafiq Ahmad Said, dead, while another officer was injured. The lone attacker was killed at the scene as stated in NST.
