MCA Criticizes Terengganu’s Exclusion of Female Gymnasts from Sukma 2024
By Loshinniy Nair S. Baskaran,
Kuala Lumpur, 16th August MCA has strongly criticized the Terengganu government’s decision to prohibit female gymnasts from participating in the 2024 Malaysian Games (Sukma), arguing that this move contradicts the progressive image promoted by Menteri Besar Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar. MCA vice-president Wee Jeck Seng highlighted that such policies are regressive and discriminatory, reflecting a backward mindset that undermines the state’s claims of progressiveness.
Wee also pointed out the recent ban on female singers performing at a Chinese temple during the Hungry Ghost Festival celebrations, further reinforcing the perception of restrictive and conservative policies in the state. These actions have sparked broader concerns about the treatment and rights of women in Terengganu.
Wee urged the state government to reconsider its stance, advocating for a more inclusive and fair approach that does not marginalize women or restrict their participation in cultural and sporting activities. He emphasized the importance of upholding the values of equality and inclusivity, which are crucial for the state’s development and image.
This incident has prompted a wider discussion on the balance between cultural practices and modern values, with many calling for policies that reflect both tradition and progress, as stated in Malaysia Kini .
