The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), in partnership with the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), recently organized a workshop focused on the Implementation of the Industry Readiness Assessment Framework for 5G Services in Malaysia. The workshop, held yesterday, followed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between MCMC and MIDA on July 4th, aimed at implementing programs and initiatives that leverage the 5G network for different vertical sectors within Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).
More than 100 participants attended the one-day workshop, which aimed to create a framework to evaluate the readiness of key economic sectors—namely manufacturing, services, construction, and agriculture—for adopting 5G technology.
The framework will assess the sectors based on several key parameters, including location, investment requirements, skills and talent availability, digital infrastructure, and existing services.
The workshop provided a valuable opportunity to collect input from participating agencies such as the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD), the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB), Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC), SIRIM Berhad, SME Corporation Malaysia (SME Corp), Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB), telecommunications companies, and various relevant industry associations.
According to MCMC, the feedback gathered during the workshop will contribute to developing a comprehensive framework for assessing the adoption of 5G technology across various industries in Malaysia, particularly SMEs. MCMC views the workshop as an essential step in preparing industries for the transition to 5G, which has the potential to significantly boost productivity and efficiency in sectors like manufacturing, services, construction, agriculture, and mining.
MIDA also reiterated its dedication to fostering a favorable environment for the adoption of this transformative technology. A spokesperson for MIDA highlighted that “The adoption of 5G technology will not only improve productivity across key industries but also position Malaysia as a leader in digital innovation in the region. This advancement will help drive economic growth and enhance the nation’s global competitiveness.”
This strategic partnership between MCMC and MIDA is anticipated to further accelerate the promotion and adoption of 5G technology across key sectors in Malaysia, ultimately strengthening the nation’s economic position.
