MIC Calls for Additional Holiday for Deepavali to Foster National Unity

18 October: MIC vice-president Datuk T. Murugiah has urged the government to declare November 1 as an additional public holiday to extend the Deepavali celebration period. With Deepavali falling on October 31 this year, Murugiah believes the extra day off would not only benefit the Indian community but also give all Malaysians the chance to engage in the celebration and embrace the country’s rich cultural diversity.
In his statement, Murugiah highlighted the significance of Deepavali for the Hindu community in Malaysia, describing it as a time for family gatherings, self-reflection, and community togetherness. He emphasized that the additional public holiday would allow Malaysians to celebrate the Festival of Lights in peace and harmony.
“Deepavali is an important festival, not just for the Indian community but for the entire nation. By declaring an extra holiday, the government would enable Malaysians to unite and appreciate each other’s cultural practices,” he said.
Murugiah also appealed directly to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, asking him to consider the request in the spirit of promoting national unity. He pointed out that such a move would show recognition and respect for Malaysia’s diverse cultural landscape.
The Festival of Lights, known as Deepavali, is one of the most important celebrations for Hindus worldwide, symbolizing the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil. In Malaysia, it is a national public holiday, with celebrations typically involving prayers, family reunions, and festive gatherings as stated in NST.
