‘Minecraft’ Movie Trailer Shocks Fans with Its Horrifying Scenes

By Pavethran Batmanathen

Warner Bros. has officially released the highly anticipated first trailer for the upcoming Minecraft movie, starring big names like Jack Black and Jason Momoa.

However, instead of excitement, the minute-long preview has sparked a mix of confusion and horror among viewers in ways that are difficult to ignore.
One of the most striking elements in the trailer is undoubtedly Jason Momoa’s bizarre haircut, which seems to do most of the talking. But beyond that, it’s the overwhelming use of green screen CGI that stands out—and not in a good way.

While it’s understandable that a Minecraft world filled with blocky landscapes would require heavy CGI, the choice to mix live-action actors into this pixelated environment has raised many eyebrows. It begs the question: Why blend live-action people with a world that is distinctly known for its simplistic, cubical design?
Fans who anticipated that a Minecraft movie would follow the game’s unique visual style were met with disappointment.

Instead of animated characters resembling those iconic pixelated avatars, the film features real actors placed within a CGI world that feels awkwardly disconnected from the Minecraft aesthetic. Jack Black, for instance, appears on-screen looking like himself—sporting his usual unshaven, casual look, seemingly straight out of one of his TikTok videos. Yet, he’s playing the role of Steve, the recognizable main character from the game.

Meanwhile, Jason Momoa, though playing along with the film’s strange vibe, dons an outlandish wig that feels out of place.

It’s clear this movie isn’t aimed at hardcore Minecraft enthusiasts or those who expected an animated adaptation more faithful to the game. Still, despite the trailer’s oddities, there’s little doubt that the movie will rake in millions at the box office. Blockbusters based on popular kids’ games, after all, don’t necessarily need to be critically acclaimed to succeed.

Movies like Five Nights at Freddy’s have shown that even quirky adaptations can become box office hits. But in this case, it feels like the movie missed a major opportunity to align its visual approach more closely with the game’s iconic pixelated charm, similar to how the LEGO movies stayed true to their source material.

The film’s visual aesthetics have been widely criticized. The adaptation of animals and enemies from the game, combined with live-action actors set against flat, artificial backdrops, results in a disjointed experience. It’s far from the polished, cohesive feel that fans might have expected from such a high-profile project.

While there’s hope that the final version of the movie, slated for release in April 2025, might be more refined, the trailer paints a bleak picture. Surprisingly, the Minecraft movie’s trailer has even managed to make the Borderlands movie—another upcoming video game adaptation—look more appealing in comparison.

Yet, regardless of how bizarre or underwhelming the movie may appear, it’s almost certain that it will bring in astronomical box office returns. Minecraft remains one of the most beloved and best-selling games in history, and its loyal fanbase alone could guarantee financial success.

Still, it’s disheartening to see what could be a groundbreaking Minecraft movie fall short, especially in a time when video game adaptations like Sonic the Hedgehog and Super Mario Bros. have impressed both fans and critics alike. If this trailer is any indication, the Minecraft movie may very well break that winning streak, leaving fans hoping for something much better than what they’ve seen so far.
