4 OCTOBER: A 25-year-old motorcyclist, Goh Weng Keong, was charged in the George Town magistrate’s court today for verbally abusing a traffic policeman after being issued a summons. Goh, who is unemployed, pleaded not guilty to the charge, which was read to him in Hokkien by an interpreter before Magistrate Nadratun Naim Mohd Saidi.
The incident occurred at around 6.45 pm on Wednesday, near a bus stop along Jalan Thean Teik in Air Itam, where Goh allegedly hurled verbal abuses at Corporal Nik Muhammad Faizal Nik Long after receiving a summons for running a red light.
Goh was charged under Section 509 of the Penal Code, which pertains to insulting the modesty of a person through word or gesture. If convicted, he could face a prison sentence of up to five years or a fine, or both.
Deputy Public Prosecutor M. Darrshini requested the court to set bail at RM9,000 with one surety, along with an additional condition that Goh refrains from disturbing any prosecution witnesses. Represented by a lawyer from the National Legal Aid Foundation (YBGK), Goh requested a lower bail, citing his unemployment and single status.
The magistrate set bail at RM8,000 with one surety and reinforced the condition that Goh must not disturb any witnesses. The case is set for mention on November 14, pending the submission of documents and the appointment of a legal representative for the accused.
The charge follows a police report lodged by Corporal Nik Muhammad Faizal after the motorcyclist was issued the summons for beating the red light. Following the report, the police launched an investigation, leading to Goh’s arrest as stated in NST.
