NCSM Unveils Landmark HPV Vaccination Initiative to Combat Cervical Cancer

By Subaashinee Kupusamy,

KLANG, 24 August: According to Dr.Ruthresh Rao Subramanyan the Senior Public Health Medical Officer, in a decisive step towards the eradication of cervical cancer, the National Cancer Society Malaysia (NCSM), in collaboration with Our Lady of Lourdes and several key partners, has launched the HPV Gardasil-4 Vaccination Programme as reported to The Hindu Press. This ground-breaking initiative, aimed at both males and females aged 13-26, is set to take place on 1st September 2024 at the Lourdes Community Hall in Klang.

Human Papillomavirus (HPV), a common DNA virus transmitted through skin contact, has been directly linked to the development of cervical cancer, among other diseases. The NCSM’s campaign underscores the critical importance of vaccination as a preventive measure, with a clear message: cervical cancer is the only cancer that can be entirely prevented through vaccination.

This programme is made possible by the generous donation of 300,000 doses of the HPV vaccine by pharmaceutical giant MSD. The NCSM, with support from the Life Insurance Association of Malaysia (LIAM) and MAS Kargo, is ensuring that the vaccine reaches those most in need, particularly in under-served communities like those in Borneo.

“Our primary goal is to contribute to the global effort to eliminate cervical cancer by increasing vaccination rates in our community,” stated Dr.Ruthresh Rao the Head of National Community Outreach to THP. “This programme not only aims to prevent HPV infections but also to raise awareness that cervical cancer is preventable. We are making strides towards a future where cervical cancer is a thing of the past.”

The impact of this programme is expected to be far-reaching, with a transformative effect on the local community. By significantly reducing the incidence of cervical cancer and other HPV-related diseases, the NCSM hopes to protect current and future generations from these preventable cancers. “We are fostering a healthier, more informed community, thanks to the accessibility of the Gardasil-4 vaccine,” added Mr.Ruthresh Rao during an interview with The Hindu Press.

According to NCSM in the interview with The Hindu Press, education plays a key role in the success of this initiative. The NCSM is rolling out a comprehensive educational campaign that includes community outreach, informational sessions, and strategic partnerships with local healthcare providers. Leveraging digital platforms, the campaign aims to reach a wider audience, ensuring that everyone understands the importance of the HPV vaccine in preventing cervical cancer.

“Promoting HPV awareness has had its challenges,” acknowledged Mr.Ruthresh Rao. “Overcoming misconceptions about the vaccine and addressing vaccine hesitancy remain hurdles. However, with the unwavering support of community leaders and healthcare professionals, we are making significant progress.” The programme’s focus on providing clear, evidence-based information is key to dispelling myths and emphasizing the critical role of vaccination in cancer prevention.

The HPV Gardasil-4 Vaccination Programme represents a crucial step in the fight against cervical cancer in Malaysia. As the NCSM and its partners continue to advocate for the health and well-being of the community, this initiative stands as a beacon of hope, promising a future free from the burden of preventable cancers.
