5 September: A new law addressing online criminal harm is expected to be tabled in Parliament soon, according to Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. The draft will first undergo review by the Attorney General’s Chambers before being brought to the Cabinet for approval.
“We are deeply concerned about the victims of cyberbullying and scams, and this law will address several aspects of online crimes,” Zahid said after attending the 2024 International Legislative Conference on Online Threats.
He commended Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform), Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, for her initiative and leadership in championing this new legislation. “I congratulate Datuk Seri Azalina for taking the lead to make this law in the best interest of all Malaysians, covering all segments of society,” he added.
The urgency for stronger laws against online threats has grown following the recent death of influencer A Rajeswary, also known as Esha. She was found dead in her Setapak condominium on July 5, just one day after lodging a police report regarding the cyberbullying she faced.
As online threats continue to rise, the proposed law aims to enhance protections against various forms of cybercrime, providing a framework to better safeguard Malaysian citizens from harm in the digital world. The government’s swift action signals a commitment to addressing the growing concerns of online safety in today’s increasingly connected society BULETIN TV3.
