23rd September 2024: A major fire destroyed nine houses in Kampung Hilir, Sibu, located along the Batang Igan River. The blaze began around 6:43 PM and rapidly spread due to the closely spaced wooden structures. Firefighters from the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) arrived promptly, with a team of 25 personnel dispatched from Sibu, Sungai Merah, and Kanowit stations. Despite their efforts, the fire engulfed all nine homes, leaving them in ruins.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. However, initial reports suggest that it may have been fueled by strong winds and the flammable nature of the wooden houses. Fortunately, no fatalities or injuries were reported. Many of the affected residents were at home during the time of the incident but managed to evacuate safely.
According to witnesses, the fire spread rapidly, giving the residents little time to save their belongings. Some families lost everything in the fire, while others managed to salvage only a few possessions. Videos shared on social media captured the intensity of the fire and the valiant efforts of the firefighters in containing it.
Authorities are working to assist the affected families, providing temporary shelter and basic necessities. The community has also rallied together, with many offering help to those who lost their homes. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of fire safety, especially in areas with densely packed wooden homes.
As investigations continue, the focus remains on supporting the displaced families and preventing future fires. This fire, which destroyed a significant number of homes in the small village, has left a lasting impact on the local community. The residents are now hoping for swift assistance to rebuild their lives and homes, as stated in Sinar Harian.
