By Loshinniy Nair S. Baskaran
15th September 2024 – Malayalees in Malaysia, the second-largest Indian ethnic group after the Tamils, celebrate the grand festival of Onam, originating from Kerala, India. The festival, tied to Kerala’s rice harvest season, commemorates the mythical King Mahabali.
In Malaysia, Onam festivities typically focus on Thiruvonam, featuring traditional customs like creating pookalams (intricate floral designs) and enjoying the grand vegetarian feast, Onam Sadya, served on banana leaves.
The celebration also includes traditional dance forms such as Kathakali, preserving Kerala’s rich cultural heritage despite being far from home, as stated in Malaymail.
