Otter Attack Turns Morning Jog Into Nightmare at Perdana Park, Sabah

By Loshinniy Nair S. Baskaran

12th September 2024 – A routine morning jog in Sabah’s Perdana Park took a terrifying turn when a jogger was attacked by otters. The incident occurred on September 10, 2024, at around 6:50 a.m. The jogger, a 33-year-old woman, was caught off guard by a group of otters as she ran along a popular route in the park. The animals bit her legs and arms, leaving her severely injured.

Two good Samaritans rushed to the scene to help, but the otters attacked them as well. Both sustained multiple injuries. The jogger was eventually taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. The condition of the other two victims remains stable, though they are recovering from the trauma and physical wounds.

Sabah Wildlife Department has launched an investigation into the rare attack, which has raised concerns about safety in the park. They believe the otters may have been provoked, though the exact cause is still under investigation. Authorities are advising visitors to the park to exercise caution around wildlife, especially during early morning or evening hours when animals are more active.

The management of Perdana Park is cooperating fully with wildlife officials to prevent future incidents. They have also placed warning signs around the park to alert visitors of potential wildlife encounters. This incident serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between human activity and wildlife in shared spaces, as stated in Malaymail.
