GEORGE TOWN, 25 June: A common practise among drivers is to keep their phones on their laps while using navigation apps or talking on speaker mode, according to recent reports. Individuals who violate the regulation may be subjected to a fine of RM1,000, according to authorities.
George Town OCPD Asst Comm Soffian Santong has advised drivers to use a phone holder to position their phone for navigation purposes. This will allow drivers to keep their eyes on the road while glancing at the screen.
In a statement, he emerged that the phone cannot be placed on one’s lap.”This is due to the fact that you will have to look down at the map on the screen.” “This could result in an accident,” he stated yesterday. Driving while on the phone is not a compoundable violation; drivers must go before a magistrate.
According to ACP Soffian, it is acceptable for drivers to use a phone holder for navigation purposes, but they should not flip the screen without a valid reason. If there is an issue with the navigation, please pause and resolve it. He explained that there is a possibility of accidentally bumping into someone while adjusting the phone on the phone holder.
He mentioned that it’s not allowed for drivers to use their smartphones when they’re stopped at a red light. He continued by saying that this leads to traffic congestion as drivers fail to notice the green light.According to ACP Soffian, the focus is on ensuring road safety for all drivers, rather than simply issuing summonses.
Anyone convicted of using a cell phone while operating a vehicle faces a maximum punishment of RM1,000 (RM300 minimum) and a maximum penalty of three months in jail. Second-time offenders face a maximum fine of RM2,000 and a maximum sentence of six months in jail, or both as stated in The Star.
