Police and Human Rights Group to Address Custodial Deaths

10th September 2024 – The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) will investigate cases of injuries and deaths in lockups, as announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
He stressed the importance of protecting detainees during investigations, ensuring suspects are not mistreated before sentencing. The Inspector-General of Police has expressed readiness to collaborate with Suhakam on this issue.
Anwar also shared his personal experience of abuse while in police custody in 1998, highlighting the urgency of addressing this problem. He affirmed the need for proper procedures to prevent future abuses, as stated in Bernama
