12 OCTOBER: Ratan Tata, renowned business leader and philanthropist, was also a passionate advocate for animal welfare, particularly stray dogs. His dedication was evident when he inaugurated the Small Animal Hospital in Mumbai on July 1, 2024, stating, “A pet is no different from a member of one’s family today.”

This hospital, his final major contribution before his passing on October 9 at the age of 86, was a personal project dear to his heart. The state-of-the-art facility, spread over 98,000 square feet, was built with a ₹165 crore investment and provides 24/7 emergency care for critically ill animals.

It offers advanced veterinary services, including ICUs, HDUs, CT scans, and MRI, ensuring comprehensive treatment for a range of medical needs.Tata’s commitment to improving animal care stemmed from a personal experience. When his pet required joint replacement surgery, Tata had to transport the dog to the University of Minnesota, where delays prevented the successful completion of the procedure.

This incident motivated Tata to bring world-class veterinary care to India, so others wouldn’t face similar challenges.Tata’s love for animals, especially dogs, was well-known. In 2018, he was set to receive a prestigious lifetime achievement award from Prince Charles (now King Charles III) at Buckingham Palace.

However, he cancelled his trip at the last moment due to his dog’s grave illness. When he explained his reason, King Charles commended him, saying, “That’s the man Ratan is.” This touching episode exemplified Tata’s lifelong dedication to the causes he held close, both human and animal as stated in India Forbes.
