Senior citizen face 17 charges of rape and sexual assault

KUALA LUMPUR: A 74-year-old oldster was arraigned in Butterworth Sessions Court, Penang today on 17 charges of rape and physical statutory offense against two children who also are siblings since 2014.
The accused, Ashaari Ibrahim was arraigned in two separate courts.
He was accused of committing the sexual crimes between January 1, 2018 and December 31, 2020.
He was charged under Section 376 (1) (e) of the Penal Code for rape which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years’ jail and whipping upon conviction, and Section 14 (d) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 for sexual assault which carries a jail term of up to 20 years and whipping upon conviction.
The accused also faces charges of committing physical statutory offense on the victim with the last incident in March 2021 when the victim was 11 years old.
He was not allowed bail and the court set July 29 for mention for appointment of counsel and submission of documents.
